Omega Centre welcomes adults of all ages and abilities and invites them to take part in a wide range of courses. Located in the Southsea area of Portsmouth, the Centre has been part of the City's education landscape since it first opened its doors as a Victorian 'board' school in 1882. The WEA took over the management of the building in 2008 and undertook a programme of major refurbishment. It is now regarded as one of Portsmouth's foremost adult education centres, with a particular focus on Arts, media, IT and Skills for Life (literacy and numeracy).
The building’s redevelopment into a 21st Century arts and education centre was largely possible thanks to the Jeffery-Machin Foundation (JMF) and support from Portsmouth City Council. The JMF was the legacy of Canon Ivor Jeffery-Machin and his wife, Brenda. Canon Jeffery-Machin worked for the WEA as a part-time tutor from 1940 until 1984; both he and Brenda were great believers in the value of lifelong and community learning.
