The Stitch and Create project was set up as a partnership between WEA, Creative Junction and The Learning Revolution and ran for eight weeks from December 2009 to March 2010. The project was important to the WEA as part of its developing commitment to adult informal learning in the area. Manor Park is one of the more deprived areas in Slough with few opportunities for women, particularly those from ethnic minority groups, to celebrate develop their traditional skills. It was also an opportunity for participants to develop their English speaking skills in a practical context and expand on what they have learnt in ESOL classes. A taster session was held as part of the end of term celebration for the three ESOL classes in Manor Park. Creative practioner, Julie Roberts, joined ESOL tutor Hilary Pugh for a practical workshop.
During the course participants learnt a number of textile techniques which they then used to make bags, skirts and cushion covers. These were exhibited at West Wing in Slough as part of Adult Learners’ Week in May 2010.
It is anticipated that the project will develop as part of the Learning Revolution and that learners will continue their work as a self-organised group in the area. |
