30 July 2010: Project Encourages Getting Involved

Listen to one learner’s experience with the WEA here. The WEA is the regional ‘take part’ champion and as part of this we have introduced some really interesting new courses. Take part is about getting involved in your community and the issues that affect it. The associated curriculum is about helping people make their voice heard by the statutory authorities and developing the skills to start up their own groups.Much of what WEA volunteers do exemplifies the take part approach and contributes to the coalition government’s ‘Big Society’. Courses under the Strengthening Democracy theme include:

E democracy

Why Vote?

Understanding Migration

Women be Heard

Challenging Racism

Introduction to Active Citizenship

Climate Change

Take Part is a three-year programme running from 2008 - 2011 and is managed by the Community Development Foundation (CDF) and is funded by the government department for Communities and Local Government.

If you are interested in teaching one of the above courses, or would like to set up a dayschool or short course for your branch or community group please get in touch with your local organizer or pryall@wea.org.uk
