Kathy Taylor, like so many other lecturers in the Further Education Sector, started her career as a part time hourly paid lecturer, teaching shorthand evening classes.   She became a full time lecturer in Business and Administration in 1988 at Northumberland College where she remained until  2009, her final job being Head of the Business, Administration and Trade Union Studies Department.

Her union experience started in one of the two predecessor unions to UCU, Natfhe, on the branch committee.   She was the  branch secretary at Northumberland College for ten years  until she left that college, regional secretary of the Northern Region from 2003 – 2008, a member of the union’s National Executive Committee for many years, serving on the equality, education and women’s committees.   She served as  President of UCU in 2012-2013.

She is active within the broader Trade Union movement, being secretary  of the South East Northumberland Trades Union Council  and the Northumberland County Association of Trades Union Councils, and is also an Executive member of the national Trades Union Councils Joint Consultative Committee.

She represents the Northern Region Trades Union Councils on the Northern Region TUC Executive, the Public Services Alliance, and Newcastle Unites, a broad-based anti-racist, anti-fascist organisation.
